Breaking the rules

My number one fashion rule is “never wear anything you’re old enough to have pictures of yourself looking ridiculous in the first time it was in style.”

I am breaking that rule today by wearing leg warmers with pumps. I may not have actually worn leg warmers with pumps in the 80’s when it was popular, but that’s only because my mom wouldn’t buy me high heels. I definitely wore this look with flats a time or two.

Today’s fashion advice: Go ahead and wear it if you want to. Who cares about the rules.

Dress: Banana Republic, ca. 2013

Leggings: Target, ca. 2013

Leg warmers: Handknit, ca. 2014 (Pattern: Salander)

Shoes: Butter, resale, ca. 2013

These are totally not jeans.

Even though they look like they are.

Stefanie says that you should wear skinny pants and boots when it’s raining, so that your pants cuffs don’t get wet, and I always do what Stefanie says. So I pulled out one of my only pairs of non-denim skinnies, and paired it with a bright and cheery handknit for this rainy day look.

Pants: Citizens of Humanity via Anthropologie, ca. 2013

It’s finally cooling down a little bit after our weirdly hot January, so I decided a handknit was in order.

Day 25: ‘Tis the season…

…for seasonal jewelry! It’s sort of a cliché that teachers have a lot of this stuff, and I’m no exception. And I love it! It makes December accessorizing a snap, and every time I wear a piece I think about the students who gave it to me. This one was a gift from a student at my previous school, probably 15 years ago.

Day 23: Lesson from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Today I’m tired of the 6 pairs of shoes I selected for this challenge, which are really only 4 now because I don’t feel like wearing flats when it’s so cold. I mean, these shoes are fine but I really wanted to wear my flat black booties, which I still love even though they’re almost ten years old.

BUT

Aren’t 6 pairs of shoes enough? That’s almost one for every day of the week, and since they’re all well made shoes, that would probably last me for years.

Today some students in my class were discussing themes in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. One of the things they noted was that Charlie appreciated his good fortune in finding a golden ticket and getting to go to the factory, whereas all the other kids took their good fortune for granted, and even found things to complain about. In the end, that’s why Willie Wonka gave Charlie the factory.

I guess my bad attitude about my shoes means that no one’s giving me a chocolate factory today.

Day 11: Pinhead

Maybe it’s because my hair was pulled up into a topknot, but today all the pictures except this one made me look like I had a really small head. I promise you my head is normal size. However, I may need to consider wearing my hair down next time I wear this big sweater. Proportion, proportion, proportion!

Day 7: Branching out

I’ve never worn this dress with anything other than black tights or bare legs before, so today I decided to try hot pink.

Day 5: Afternoon walks

It turns out that the weekends are actually the more difficult part of this 30-30-30 challenge. Commenter Laura asked me last week whether the weekends count, and I guess we could have left them out, but that didn’t even occur to me. I think it’s interesting to consider how to make items work for both the weekend and the weekdays, or how to style the few weekend-only items in different ways.

These are some weekend-only jeans, with a bunch of other stuff that I wear any time.
